Each year, most employers with 100 or more employees in their plans are required to file a Form 5500 for their Health & Welfare and Retirement plans. The annual Form 5500 must be submitted electronically and is due on the last day of the seventh month following the plan year end date.  So, for 2016 plans that operate on a calendar year basis (January 1, 2016 – December 31, 2016), your annual Form 5500 due date is July 31, 2017.

If you’re not ready to file this year’s Form 5500, you can always file a Form 5558 – extending your deadline to the 15th day of the third month after your normal due date, or October 15, 2017 for plans ending December 31, 2016.
