On November 14, 2012, the US Customs and Immigration Services published a new Form I-9. A s of January 22, 2017, all employers are now required to utilize the newly published form.

The Form I-9 is used to verify both the identity and employment authorization of an individual hired to work in the United States. According to the US Citizenship and Immigration Services, employers are required to ensure proper documentation of Form I-9 on all individuals they hire – including citizens and non-citizens.

With the new Form I-9, the US Customs and Immigration Services have introduced three ways to complete the Form I-9:

  1. You can print and manually fill out the form
  2. You can fill out the form online and print and sign the form
  3. You can use an electronic Form I-9 vendor

The US Customs and Immigration Services encourages employers to read the new instructions carefully, as there have been some changes to how the form must be completed.
